Abstract
The article places Wagner’s Ring of the Nibelung within its historical context by highlighting the similarities between the tetralogy and French Grand Opéra, which enjoyed great popularity during Wagner’s lifetime. In particular, the use of the chorus in Götterdämmerung anchors the plot in a (pseudo-)historical context, which was also of great significance to Grand Opéra.
